This page discusses various mentor program metrics and encourages the use of Mentor Dashboards to track quantity, quality and impact. Thanks to Nancy Costello for preparing this content.
This document outlines possible metrics for mentoring programs to enable organizations to measure overall quantity, quality and impact. We believe that “you get what you measure” and that metrics selection is an important leadership task. Funders, in particular want to see specific measurable impact.
Principles:
- Keep it simple
- Customize it to your organization and clients
- Start with a few – add as needed
- Track as close to the work as possible
- Choose one metric that goes on the executive dashboard
Metrics with Examples:
Metric Type | Examples | Considerations |
Quantity | # of mentors # of mentees length of mentoring relationships mentor/mentee meeting frequency demographics |
*Ensure adequate pipeline of appropriate mentors to meet organizational needs
*Can show growth over time or identify trends that need to be addressed |
Quality | Mentee feedback Mentor feedback Use of mentor skills Completion of training Appropriate matching criteria (personal needs, interests, demographics) |
*Consider most critical components of successful mentoring for your organization
*Reliability and validity of survey tools |
Impact | HS graduation Grade promotion Employment Recovery Social/emotional wellness |
*Must match your client population and be directly related to your mission |
Further Discussion:
- There are many types of metrics, for example quantitative vs. qualitative and process vs. outcome. Aim to have quantitative where possible and easy. Outcome metrics are our ultimate goals- process metrics are predictors of that success. Tracking frequency can be weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually and should be tailored to the priority of the metric.
- Creating a Mentor Dashboard is a powerful way to monitor results and communicate those results both internally and externally. See below for an example.
